New Report Slams Alamance County's 287(g) Program
A new report from the Immigration and Human Rights Policy Clinic at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the American Civil Liberties Union concludes Alamance County's 287 (g) program encourages racial profiling and other civil rights violations and is being used to "purge" Alamance County and other parts of North Carolina of "unwelcome immigrants." A Spokesperson for the Alamance County Sheriff questioned the "objectivity and validity" of the study, and offered 2008 traffic stop statistic showing that only 52 Hispanics were stopped out of the 698 stops deputies made. That statistic seems dubious as its numbers are lower than the numbers provided for overall 287(g) arrests in Spring of 2008. More and more light is being shed on this inhumane program as each day passes. (1) The Federal Government doesn't pay for it; County taxpayers do. (2) It targets the "low lying fruit" -- hard working, salt of the earth immigrants, rather than violent individuals and terrorists. (3) It sacrifices trust in law enforcement by the immigrant community for no justifiable end. Until Congress solves our immigration crisis, we aren't deporting anymore people than are currently sneaking in anyway.
